Musicals in the UK include: Me And My Girl (West End), Kiss Me, Kate (RSC), The Pajama Game (tour), Jekyll (tour) and Lonely Hearts (tour). He has directed numerous plays at theatres including the Watermill, Hampstead, Chichester, the Tricycle and the Old Red Lion.
In the USA: an award-winning A View from the Bridge, his own adaptation of A Christmas Carol, Hay Fever, Closer and Equus (all for the Alley Theatre, Houston) and Frank Wildhorn’s musical Civil War (tour). He also directed the USA regional premiere of Alan Ayckbourn’s House & Garden. After working for four years at the RSC, where his work included The Plantagenets, Twelfth Night, Venus and Adonis, Totem, All God¹s Chillun Got Wings and Kiss Me, Kate, he began his relationship with Trevor Nunn. This included reviving his productions of Idomeneo at Glyndebourne, Peter Grimes and working as director’s associate on The Cherry Orchard (NT Cottesloe and Olivier).
Stephen was director’s associate on the critically acclaimed NT productions Not About Nightingales (NT, Alley Theatre and Broadway) and An Enemy of the People (NT and Ahmanson Theatre), and he co-directed The Relapse with Trevor Nunn (NT Olivier). Also, The Coast of Utopia, a trilogy of new Tom Stoppard plays (NT Olivier), and the opera Sophie¹s Choice (Royal Opera House).
